It's Girl Scout cookie season

MONTICELLO, NY — Girl Scout Troop #580 from Wurtsboro was spotted doing a brisk business (outside Shoprite) in Monticello last weekend. Cookie sale season continues through May 14 and you can find this troop (and others) on Facebook. For more on celebrating small town life, see Jonathan Charles Fox’s column.

New citizens sworn in

MONTICELLO, NY — On April 5, 25 immigrants were sworn in as new U.S. citizens at the courthouse in Monticello.

The countries of origin were diverse, and included Australia, Belgium, Honduras, El Salvador, Trinidad, Denmark, Egypt, Iran, Poland, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Montserrat and Peru.

Sullivan going digital?

MONTICELLO, NY — Sullivan County officials thought it would be a good idea to advertise some of what the county has to offer on a billboard on Route 17. State Sen. John Bonacic was able to help that plan move forward with an award of $100,000 through the Dormitory Authority of State of New York (DASNY).

Sullivan projects receive $2.5 million

MONTICELLO, NY— Gov. Cuomo’s office has announced grants totaling $2.5 million, which will go to restore three properties in the towns of Rockland and Liberty and the Village of Liberty. The grants, from a project called Restore New York Communities Initiative, were announced on March 26.

'Sound of Music' at Monticello High

MONTICELLO, NY — Monticello High School and RJK Middle School will present a joint production of “The Sound of Music” on Friday, April 6 and 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 7 and 14 at 2 p.m. The final collaboration between Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II, “The Sound of Music” has become a play beloved around the world.

Progress in Sullivan Health

MONTICELLO, NY — The national county health rankings were released on March 14, and as has been the case for the past six years, Sullivan County came in next to last place in New York State. The Bronx had the worst health outcomes out of the 62 counties in the state, while Sullivan came in at 61.

Aftermath of two storms

MONTICELLO, NY — The blizzard that dumped a foot of snow on March 2, followed by another storm five days later, had county, town and village officials scrambling to limit the damage, and get things back to normal for at least a week.
