Got That Swing
I spent my Friday night with a bunch of swingers... swing dancers that is. Yoga instructor, actress, and all-around guru Susan Mendoza taught a free swing dance class at The Western Hotel. It was upstairs in the grand ballroom and it felt like we were transported back in time, when people actually went out dancing on Friday nights. We were learning the lindy hop style of swing dance, and Susan told us it originated in Harlem. The style includes lots of tricks and partnering and amazingly fast moves (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkthxBsIeGQ). We were told to bring knee pads. If you want to come try it out, classes are held every Friday at 6:30PM.
From one dance to another, the next day I went to Nutcracker rehearsal. My mom's studio, The Dance Center in Port Jervis, puts on the magical show every year. One of the dancers got injured so I was filling in for her last minute. I was in the snowflake dance. After Clara and the Nutcracker Prince battle the Mouse King they journey through the forest to get to the Land of Sweets. The dance is actually quite grueling, and I'm not in good enough shape to make it through without gasping for breath and my feet throbbing in my pointe shoes. For those who don't know, ballet is hard!
Sunday is the day for brunch. We celebrated my boyfriend's birthday with his parents at the Heron (no, they aren't paying me to promote them, it's just that good). Try the crispy eggs, or the breakfast burrito, or the pancakes. or...you can't go wrong.
