Out and About

The rhythm of my life as publisher is emerging. Maybe.

All I know is that I’m loving being out and about -- taking pictures, talking to people.

My weekend started with a visit to the Barryville Farmers Market.  I hadn’t had the opportunity to go there – and was thankful to talk to farmers and food providers as they were packing up for the season.

They say it’s a good market.  And the meat purveyors whole-heartedly lament that there is not a red-meat processing plant in the region. I heard that production capacity would be increased if farmers weren’t spending seven hours taking their animals to a processing plant some 70 miles away.  (I wondered about a for-fee service that would take the animals the USDA facility.)

Then, with an almond croissant in hand, I made my way to the Narrowsburg Halloween Parade and Dance. It was a delightfully small and intimate parade down Main Street, with a small crowd, and merchants with candy.  Held in the embrace of small fire trucks at the front and the rear of the procession, the atmosphere on Main Street felt warm, inclusive, and fun-loving. It was small-town living at its best.  (Check out TRR’s Facebook album.)

The party continued at a spectacularly decorated Town Hall community room. (Kudos to the Tusten Youth Commission did a great job in hosting the event.)

And they didn’t stop there. This amazing event was followed up by an even more amazing event on Halloween evening for a community trunk or treat event at the Narrowsburg Flats playground.

There was pizza; there was hotdogs, an air slide, a plethora of games, decorated trunks, craft tables, all staffed by volunteers. It was community working together to provide a community experience for everyone.

Whoosh.

Amazing. Truly amazing.

At this time of great disconnection, it is lovely to have this sense of inclusive and accessible community strongly emerging.
