I love autumn and all the rituals of buttoning down for the winter—unpacking the heavier quilts, putting the garden to bed, outfitting the screen doors with storm windows and building the woodpile in preparation for evenings around the wood stove.

A thought on bullying
Our most basic responsibility as human beings is to care for the least among us. In the school setting, this means the grown-ups should look out for the children. We should love them and treat them like they are our own, because they are.
No one has ever accused me of being particularly funny. I can usually elicit a warm, hearty laugh from my husband for my sharp wit, but he never suggested I take my act on the road.
Politics, especially local politics, is hard work. Easier to share headlines from the national press. Following local political trends in Sullivan and Delaware counties is another matter; that needs sustained attention and real commitment. And it’s certainly less rakish.

The People Who Make it Happen
(You know who you are)
They save our lives, they plant our flowers.
They work for free for many hours.
They sort our books, they pick up our litter
and I’ve never seen them be bitter.
They feed our needy, they help the churches,
Pennsylvania lawmakers and the governor are supposed to pass a budget every year by July 1. But this year, they passed half a budget. The parties involved agreed on how much money they wanted to spend, but they could not come up with an agreement about how to pay for the proposed budget.
The real offense
It is one of our warmer October days. Leaves are still falling. Butterflies are making their way around the plants on the deck. It is nice to be home early.
