In My Humble Opinion

Not everyone was sitting on the lawn as Yasgur entertained during the inaugural Lakeside Music Series concert held in Gazebo Park by the shores of Kauneonga Lake, NY. Dancing is fully encouraged.

Beautiful Bethel!

There are literally more than 50 towns, villages and hamlets that we at The River Reporter write about as we traverse the Upper Delaware River region in search of stories that continue our 40-plus-year tradition of award-winning coverage, delivering all the news that’s fit to print in your neck of the woods.

With expanded roles in the stage production of “Funny Girl,” now playing at the Forestburgh Playhouse, Lee Cohen and Melodie Wolford (as Eddie and Mrs. Brice) are a delightful departure from the film version.

My life’s a musical comedy

A long time ago (aka the 1970s) in a galaxy far, far away, I was a professional actor, which proved to be a decent training ground for my career as a theatre critic, among other dubious achievements.

Even in the portraits on the wall, something is afoot  in the Forestburgh Playhouse production of “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.”

No time like the present

Regardless of how frequently I remind myself to stop and smell the roses, more often than not they bloom while I am racing past them at lightning speed, on my way to a play, a concert, a gallery and a street fair.

The NACL stilt corps led the Trout Parade last week, ushering in the summer season in the Catskills.

June is bustin' out all over

Ain’t that the truth. It seems like only a week ago that I still had the heat on, and now…? Air conditioners are humming. Apparently, Mother Nature finally got the memo, and while May was a bit on the chilly side, June has been positively sultry for the last few days.

Far too close for comfort, the robin seems to be well aware that I am on the inside nervously looking out.

Bye-bye birdie

In the interest of full disclosure, I will admit that I am not wild about birds. Oh, they’re fine up in the trees or flitting about, soaring through the sky overhead, but when they get in my personal space? Different story. Honestly, I have never understood the allure of keeping birds inside and loathe the idea of caging them.

“It’s meant to be viewed in profile,” artist Allan Rubin informed, as he posed with his latest “Can-O-Masters” creation, “DANTE,” which is on display as part of the CAS members show in Livingston Manor.

I’m not getting any younger

That’s right—I completed another full revolution around the sun over the holiday weekend, but truth be told, it wasn’t exactly a picnic.

When this blue beauty was asked about her first order of business as the newly crowned 2017 Miss Galaxy? “Why, to meet Dharma the Wonder Dog, of course!”

The truth is out there

For those of you who know me, it will likely come as no surprise to learn that I’m fascinated with the UFO phenomenon. Gifted with a telescope at the age of 10 and with encouragement from my grandfather, I turned my attention skyward and began scanning the heavens for signs of intelligent life on other planets.

NACL Theatre’s Keith McHenry, left, Forestburgh General Store proprietor Debbi Jagel and Earthgirl Pottery’s Jill Weiner all swapped brochures with other businesses during the annual Sullivan Catskills Literature Exchange held at the Forestburgh Playhouse last weekend.

They can’t all be winners

The words above can be attributed to any number of things in my world. Photos I’ve taken, concerts I’ve attended, plays that I’ve seen… even columns that I have written, and with nearly 500 of those under my belt for The River Reporter alone, well—they can’t all be winners.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the 2017 Sullivan County Pageant winners!

Young at heart

Playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) once famously declared that “youth is wasted on the young,” and I’ve been known to quote his pithy comment on occasion, but nowadays… I wonder.
